The young crescent Moon, seen on February 3, 2011 when it was just 20 hours and 23 minutes old. The photo was taken at 22:54 UT on Feb. 3, 2011 (5:54 p.m. EST Feb. 3, 2011) while New Moon occurred at 02:31 UT on Feb. 3, 2011 (9:31 p.m. EST Feb. 2, 2011). The thin crescent extends only about 100 degrees around instead of an expected 180 degrees because of the young age of the Moon. At the time of this photo, the bottom of the crescent was only 2 degrees 39 minutes above the horizon and 8 degrees 54 minutes from the Sun. | |
