NASA's Mars Odyssey detected water ice in the northern hemisphere. During the Martian summer, a large expanse of frozen water (blue) is seen on the surface of Mars. During winter, much of the ice is obscured by layers of carbon dioxide frost or snow (dry ice, green). This image shows the northern hemisphere of Mars. The water-rich soil layer is the Martian equivalent of permafrost. This image, showing the composition of elements in the top meter of the surface of Mars, is based on data from the gamma-ray spectrometer on board NASA's Mars Odyssey spacecraft.
