Nygren standing next to a Digital Optical Module (DOM). The DOMs are the main components of IceCube. They collect the Cherenkov light emitted by the charged particles that are created when a neutrino interacts in the ice. IceCube consists of over five thousand DOMs instrumenting a volume of a cubic kilometre. LBNL designed and built the DOM electronics, 2009. David Robert Nygren (born December 30, 1938) is a particle physicist known for his invention of the time projection chamber. He has worked at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory since 1973, and has been called the most distinguished developer of particle detection instruments in the country. | |
