Scleral buckling is a procedure in which a thin piece of rubber, plastic, or sponge made of silicone is sewn into the sclera to treat retinal detachments. It can be localized to the area of the detachment or tear, or it can be a band sewn around the circumference of the sclera. The explant creates an indentation in order to re-establish the proximity of separated retinal layers and encourage reattachment. | |
