Female black lemur (Eulemur macaco macaco) in a tree. A mature female black lemur possesses a rust red coat, whilst the male is black. The difference is so pronounced that for many years they were considered to be different species. The black lemur lives in forests on the north-western tip of Madagascar and on two neighbouring islands. It feeds on fruits, flowers, nectar and leaves, spending most of its time in the forest canopy. The black lemur forms small groups of related individuals, in which the females are usually dominant. Destruction of the forests of Madagascar means that this animal is becoming increasingly rare. Photographed in Madagascar. | |
