Meucci's telephone design. Cutaway illustration of the telephone designed by Italian inventor Antonio Meucci (1808-1889). The mouthpiece is at left and the earpiece is at right. Two women using the phone system are at bottom. Meucci installed a working telephone system between his home and workshop in 1855, after his wife became paralysed. In 1860 he demonstrated the system but failed to obtain funding. He filed an intent to patent on 28 December 1871, but lack of funds for this and a subsequent law suit against Alexander Graham Bell (who filed his patent in 1876) both failed. In 2002, the US Congress revoked Bell's patent, and credited Meucci with the invention. For this illustration without labels, see image C036/7695. | |
