Darwinius primate fossil. Known as Ida, this mammal fossil is remarkably well preserved and even shows remnants of soft tissue and fur around its edges. This specimen is an early primate that shows similarities but also differences with lemurs, It is a basal strepsirrhine primate from the Middle Eocene epoch. Its only known species, Darwinius masillae, lived approximately 47 million years ago based on dating of the fossil site, the Messel Pit in Germany. | |
