Apollo 11 ticker tape parade, New York City, USA, with the three astronauts in the lead car. This part of the parade took place on Broadway and Park Avenue. The parade took place on 13 August 1969. From right, NASA astronauts Neil Armstrong, Mike Collins, and Buzz Aldrin were the crew of the historic Apollo 11 mission, achieving the first landing by humans on the Moon on 20 July 1969. This was the first parade held to honour the Apollo 11 astronauts, with an estimated 4 million people lining the streets. This was followed by ticker tape parades in Chicago and Los Angeles later that day, and then a State Banquet in Los Angeles and the presentation of the Presidential Medal of Freedom to the astronauts. Similar scenes occurred over the following months in other US cities and across the world as people turned out to see the men who had been to the Moon. |
