Apollo 11 LM ascent stage in lunar orbit. Earth is at centre, with Mars a red dot at right of the Earth. NASA's Apollo 11 mission to the Moon took place from 16-24 July 1969. This mission was the first landing by humans on the Moon, with Neil Armstrong and Edwin 'Buzz' Aldrin descending to the surface in the Lunar Module (LM-5, Eagle), while Michael Collins remained in orbit in the Command/Service Module (CSM) some 110 kilometres above the surface. This picture was taken from the CSM of the ascent stage of Eagle as Armstrong and Aldrin returned to the CSM on day 6 of the mission (21 July 1969). The two spacecraft docked and the three astronauts returned to Earth, splashing down in the Pacific on 24 July 1969. | |
