19th Century diving bell. 1887 illustration of a diving bell designed by Scottish engineer Charles Spalding. This early diving apparatus allowed someone to breath underwater by supplying the diver with air from inside the bell through a hose. Spalding improved on existing designs by adding a system of balance-weights to ease the raising and lowering of the bell, along with a series of ropes for signalling the surface crew. | |
