Illustration of the stages of the InSight (Interior Exploration using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy and Heat Transport) spacecraft's landing on Mars. The protective aeroshell (white) encapsulating InSight's robotic lander detaches from the cruise model and enters the planet's atmosphere. Parachutes then slow the descent once the heat shield is jettisoned. Engines further slow the descent until InSight lands safely on the Martian surface. InSight is designed to studying the interior of Mars. It will investigate the processes that formed and shaped Mars and its findings will improve our understanding of the evolution of the inner solar system's rocky planets. InSight was launched on 5 May 2018 and landed successfully on 26th November 2018. | |
