Aneroid barometer. Cutaway illustration of an aneroid barometer, an instrument for measuring pressure. The instrument consists of a flexible metal box called an aneroid cell or capsule (yellow). The capsule is a vacuum chamber, prevented from collapsing by a strong spring (bright yellow). Small changes in external air pressure cause the capsule to expand or contract. These movements are amplified by mechanical levers attached by a spindle to a needle (red) on the face of the barometer, allowing changes in pressure to be read off the dial. Barometers measuring atmospheric pressure are used in weather forecasting. | |
