Mars Ice Home. Illustration of members of a potential future Mars exploration mission by a shelter based on the Mars Ice Dome concept developed at NASA's Langley Research Center. Also known as the 'Mars Ice House' design, and worked on by members of the Ice Home Feasibility Study, the shelter is an inflatable torus surrounded by a shell of water ice. It can be deployed by robotics before the crew arrive. The ice shields the crew from radiation, and could be used as part of the fuel for the return journey. Carbon dioxide gas would be used as insulation between the living space and the ice layer. Artwork published in December 2016. | |
