Santorini, Greece, seen from the International Space Station (ISS). This ring marked the what was once a volcanic cone making a single island. Santorini (now several islands) is what remains after an enormous volcanic eruption in around 1600-27 BC destroyed most of the island. Water from the Aegean Sea rushed in to fill the resulting caldera, forming a 12 kilometre-long lagoon. At the centre of the lagoon is Nea Kameni, the latest volcano to form at this site.
