Delphi Omphalos on black background. The marble Omphalos of Delphi was found in the area to the northeast of the Temple of Apollo. It is probably an Hellenistic or Roman reproduction of the original omphalos that used to stand in the adyton (inner sanctum), beside the tripod and the daphne (bay leaves), where the prophetic responses were given via the Pythia, the priestess of the sanctuary of Delphi. It's relief decoration represents the jewel-encrusted woollen net which originally wrapped the sacred object. According to Greek mythology the omphalos marked the centre of the earth, the 'World's Navel', the point where the two eagles released by Zeus from opposite ends of the world eventually met. The image shows a re-textured reconstruction of the fragmented object on display at Delphi. | |
