Algol, designated Beta Persei and known as the Demon Star, is a bright multiple star in Perseus constellation, located 93 light-years from Earth. It is one of the first variable stars to be discovered. Algol is a three-star system in which the hot luminous primary member and the larger, but cooler and fainter secondary member regularly pass in front of each-other causing eclipses. Thus Algol's luminosity regularly dips to about 1/3 its normal brightness. The period of variability is 2, 86 days and the eclipse lasts about 10 hours.
