Britton Chance (1913-2010), US biochemist and biophysicist, working in his laboratory. Chance studied at the University of Pennsylvania and Cambridge University, obtaining two doctorates (1940 and 1942). He worked for the MIT Radiation Laboratory in the Second World War, and then worked at the University of Pennsylvania on enzyme structures, as well as analytical techniques such as phosphorus NMR, optical spectroscopy, and fluorometry. Chance was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1952 and received the national Medal of Science in 1974. He was elected a Foreign Member of the Royal Society in 1981. | |
