Ceres hydrogen content. Composite image of the northern hemisphere of the dwarf planet Ceres, compiled from neutron counting data, showing the concentration of hydrogen in the upper metre of the loose surface material (regolith). Ceres is the largest object in the asteroid belt, which lies between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. Neutron count decreases with increasing hydrogen concentration: blue (highest hydrogen concentration/lowest neutron count) to red (lowest hydrogen concentration/highest neutron count). Lower neutron counts near the pole suggest the presence of water ice within a metre of the surface at high latitudes. Imaged by the gamma ray and neutron detector (GRaND) instrument on NASA's Dawn space probe.
