Caracalla (188-217), Roman emperor. Caracalla reigned as co-emperor and later emperor from 198 to 217. Caracalla was the elder son of Septimius Severus, the final emperor in the Year of the Five Emperors, the disputed successions that occurred following the assassination of Commodus in 192. Severus established his sons Caracalla and Geta as co-emperors from 198 and 209, though they failed to rule together after his death in 211, with Caracalla having his brother murdered later that year. Caracalla was himself assassinated just over 6 years later. Photographed in the National Archaeological Museum of Naples, Italy. | |
