Star trails and fireflies. Time-exposure image of stars around the northern celestial pole and shorter tracks of light (yellow) from fireflies. The star trails are created by the Earth's rotation on its axis. Fireflies are nocturnal beetles that exhibit bioluminescence, the ability of an organism to emit visible light. The flashing lights enable fireflies to signal their presence to one another, which is of special importance during the mating season. Photographed in July. | |
