Milky Way and airglow over tents. 360-degree stereographic projection of the night sky above a camp site in the Himalayas. On the ground are tents, a glacial lake and a glacier. Airglow (green glow on the horizon) is a phenomenon where a planetary atmosphere emits a faint glow when atoms are excited by sunlight. Visible in the sky is Sirius (bottom right), the brightest star in the sky. On the edge of the frame at far right is the open star cluster M44. At upper left is the Andromeda Galaxy (M31). The pole star (Polaris) is at upper centre. Parts of the Milky Way are at upper left and lower right. Zodiacal light is at centre right. Photographed on the border of China and Bhuta, on 8 October 2016. For the panoramic version of this view, see image C040/4634. | |
