Milky Way and zodiacal light over the Himalayas. Zodiacal light (far left) and the Milky Way (arc at centre) in the night sky after sunset over a Himalayan landscape, seen from a base camp in Sagarmatha National Park, Nepal. Green and yellow airglow is seen on the horizon at far left. Zodiacal light is sunlight reflected from dust particles orbiting in the plane of the solar system. From Earth it is seen as a cone of light along the ecliptic, the orbital path of the Sun, Moon and planets in the sky. The Milky Way is our galaxy seen from the inside, forming a band of stars and nebulae stretching across the sky. Airglow is a phenomenon where a planetary atmosphere emits a faint glow when atoms are excited by sunlight. Photographed on 5 December 2015. | |
