Solar corona over the Himalayas in Nepal. A solar corona (different from the Sun's outer atmosphere seen during a solar eclipse) is a diffraction phenomenon. The rings usually extend for a few solar radii around the solar disc. It can often be seen in clouds close to the Sun. The spectral colours can be very pronounced, as here, in thin, even layers of cloud. In the foreground is the Himalayan mountain Ama Dablam (6812 metres). Photographed on 29 November 2015. | |
