Chloroplast. Illustration of the internal structure of a chloroplast, the organelle in plant cells responsible for photosynthesis. A chloroplast has outer and inner membranes enclosing a fluid (stroma) and membrane structures called thylakoids (green) that form both grana (stacks) and lamellae (flat planes). Also shown is plastidial DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid, red loop at lower centre), ribosomes (yellow spheres) and starch grains (purple spheres). The thylakoid stacks are the site of photosynthesis, the capturing of energy from sunlight using the green pigment chlorophyll. This energy can be stored in the form of starch for later use. | |
