Expanding star destroying a planet. Illustration of a star expanding an destroying one of its planets. This stage of a main-sequence star's life, known as its red giant stage, begins when the star exhausts the hydrogen fuel in its core. It will then begin burning hydrogen in a shell surrounding the core, and this will cause the star to expand. The expanding star will engulf its inner planets before collapsing into a white dwarf star. More massive stars may go supernova and collapse to form a neutron star or black hole. | |
