Polar sunrise on Mars, illustration. The polar regions of Mars have deposits of water ice and, in the colder regions, deposits of carbon dioxide ice. These ice deposits recede and sublimate and melt in the spring and summer periods, and are redeposited in the autumn and winter of each hemisphere. Mars is much colder than Earth, and has a thin atmosphere of carbon dioxide. Temperatures at the Martian south pole are low enough to maintain a residual carbon dioxide ice cap even during the summer. | |
