Olympus Mons caldera. Illustration of the summit caldera of the Olympus Mons volcano on Mars, with the Sun in the sky. The caldera is some 25 kilometres across and 3 kilometres deep. A caldera forms when the ground above a magma chamber collapses. Here, several such collapses have formed calderas inside the main caldera. Fracture lines are also seen. This caldera is the 24-kilometre-high peak of the 600-kilometre-wide Olympus Mons. | |
