High-neutron-flux nuclear reactor fuel rods, abstract image. Fuel element assembly for a high-neutron-flux reactor. Each fuel element rod has a twisted form, with the fuel elements combined to form the assembly shown here. Placed under several metres of water, the rods emit a blue glow called Cerenkov radiation. This is produced when energetic charged particles travel faster through water than light. Nuclear reactors are used in research to study the effects of radiation on materials, and for the production of rare and valuable medical and industrial isotopes. The neutrons produced from reactors have a range of applications in various areas of physics. | |
