Infected eye. Close-up image of the left eye of a 68-year old woman showing severe crusting due to blepharoconjunctivitis. This is an infection, probably due to Staphylococcus aureus, that has started in congested meibomian oil glands at the base of the eyelashes and subsequently spread to the conjunctiva (covering membrane of the eye. Infections with S. aureus commonly form pus that crusts around the eyes, especially at night. Treatment is with a topical antibiotic, often combined with steroid eye drops to reduce swelling, and regular cleaning of the affected area. | |
