Lagrange points, computer artwork. These are points in space (L1-5) where the combined gravitational forces of two large bodies, such as Earth and the sun or Earth and the moon, balance the centrifugal force felt by a much smaller third body. The interaction of the forces creates a point of equilibrium where a spacecraft, such as a satellite, may be parked to make observations. They are named after 18th century mathematician Joseph-Louis Lagrange, and they are also called libration points. | |
