BepiColombo mission spacecraft, seen in acoustic testing at the Large European Acoustic Facility (LEAF) at the European Space Agency (ESA) test centre in June 2017. The walls of the chamber are fitted with powerful speakers that reproduce the noise during launch. BepiColumbo is a joint mission of ESA and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) to explore Mercury. The mission, due for launch in 2018, has three components: ESA's Mercury Transfer Module (MTM), ESA's Mercury Planetary Orbiter (MPO) and JAXA's Mercury Magnetospheric Orbiter (MMO). The MPO will be equipped with 11 instruments for mapping Mercury's surface and to look for water ice in polar craters on the planet's unlit side. | |
