Twin craters, Mars Express colour-coded elevation model. These craters (around 50 kilometres across) are located in the Thaumasia Planum region of Mars. The crater at right is the Arima Crater. The central pits are thought to have formed by explosive vaporizing or drainage of subsurface ice. The Digital Terrain Model (DTM) colour codes elevations: purple (lowest) through blue, green, yellow and red to white (highest). Data obtained by the High-Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC) on Mars Express, on 4 January 2013 during orbit 11467. The European Space Agency's Mars Express has been orbiting Mars since December 2003. | |
