Microglia brain cells. Fluorescence light micrograph of examples of a type of glial cell in the brain known as a microglia cell (blue and green). Glial cells, or neuroglia, are non-neural cells of the central nervous system (CNS, brain and spinal cord). They are the predominant cell type in brain tissue. They provide physical and functional support to neurons. Microglia (smaller than the macroglia such as astrocytes) are part of the immune response that protects the brain. They are thought to play a role in slowing the progress of prion diseases and other neurodegenerative diseases.
