American kestrel (Falco sparverius) perching on a cactus. The American kestrel inhabits open country and scrub throughout the Americas, with the exception of the Amazon rainforest and the cold northeastern parts of Canada. It feeds on small mammals and birds, although in summer it mainly feeds on large insects. It is a small falcon, rarely exceeding 30 centimetres in length. Photographed in Baja California, Mexico. | |
