Mars Express spacecraft, illustration. Both of the spacecraft's 20 metre long radar booms (yellow) for its MARSIS (Mars Advanced Radar for Subsurface and Ionosphere Sounding) instrument are deployed. The Mars Express spacecraft was launched in June 2003, arriving at the plant in December the same year, to study the atmosphere, surface and subsurface of the planet. In 20118 the MARSIS instrument found the first evidence of a stable body of liquid water on the planet at the present time beneath the south polar ice cap. The background image of the Martian surface was taken by the spacecraft's high resolution stereo camera. | |
