Coconut crab (Birgus latro). The coconut crab is a terrestrial hermit crab. With a weight of up to around 4 kg and growing to up to 1 m in length from leg to leg, it is the largest land-living arthropod in the world. It is found in Indonesia, islands across the Indian Ocean and parts of the Pacific Ocean as far east as the Gambier Islands, mirroring the distribution of the coconut palm. Photographed on a beach in the Rajah Ampat Islands, West Papua, Indonesia. | |
