Coloured X-ray of the chest of a male infant with Wilson-Mikity syndrome. This rare lung condition, also known as a pulmonary dysmaturity syndrome, affects premature babies. It is characterised by the rapid development of emphysema, an enlargement of the alveoli (air sacs) of the lungs that damages them and reduces the surface area for exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide. Areas of emphysema as well as nodular lesions are seen here. Treatment is with mechanical ventilation and oxygen supplementation, but the condition is often fatal. | |
