Lunar halo, Chongqing, China. This halo of light around the Moon, known as a paraselene, or Moon dog, is caused by the refraction (bending) of moonlight by ice crystals in cirrostratus clouds or fog. This is a 22-degree lunar halo, forming a ring with a radius on the sky of around 22 degrees (the angular distance). Photographed on 9 May 2015. | |
