Active site of alcohol dehydrogenase enzyme. Alcohol dehydrogenase (ALDH) catalyses the oxidation of ethanol (alcohol) to acetaldehyde in the liver. The active site of the enzyme includes NAD (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) as a redox coenzyme. In this model, NAD has been replaced by an inactive analogue (stick structure, color-coded by element). The ALDH active site also includes a zinc(2+) ion (grey) held in place by the side chains of two cysteine residues and one histidine residue. A fourth bonding site on the metal ion holds ethanol in the correct position to react with NAD. | |
