Aldehyde dehydrogenase enzyme structure. Alcohol dehydrogenase (ALDH) catalyses the oxidation of ethanol (alcohol) to acetaldehyde in the liver. The reaction requires NAD (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) as a redox coenzyme. In this model, NAD has been replaced by an inactive structural analogue (orange). The ADH active site also includes a zinc(2+) ion (green) that acts as a Lewis acid, holding ethanol in the correct position to react with NAD. | |
