Saturn V first stage and Apollo spacecraft. At left is a Saturn V first stage (S-IC) for a later Apollo flight. The spacecraft and command module for the current Apollo flight (Apollo 9, AS-504) is at right, about to be placed on its Saturn V launch vehicle (not seen). This final assembly is taking place at the Kennedy Space Center, Florida, USA. The Saturn V was the launch vehicle for NASA's Apollo program of manned missions to the Moon. The Apollo program took place between 1961 and 1975. The Saturn V was one of the most powerful rockets ever made. Fully fuelled, the 110-metre high rocket weighed over 3000 tonnes. The rocket's first stage was the stage used during take-off. Apollo 9 launched on 3 March 1969. Photographed in December 1968. | |
