Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a freeze-fracture through a budding yeast cell. Yeast is the single-celled form of a fungus. Budding is a method of asexual reproduction in which a new individual is derived from an outgrowth (or bud) that becomes detached from the body of the parent (here, the lower cell). The large light pink structures with slightly fuzzy edges are lipid bodies, consisting of glycerol and fatty acids. They serve as reservoirs for potential chemical energy. The cell nuclei are green, each with a red nucleolus. Mitochondria are orange. Magnification: x28, 000 at 228x292mm size. | |
