Activated galactic supermassive black hole. Illustration of the surroundings of a supermassive black hole, typical of that found at the heart of many galaxies. This black hole is named Swift J1644+57. It is 3.9 billion light years from Earth, in the constellation of Draco. It was activated by the disintegration of a passing star that supplied the material that formed an accretion disc (red) and particle jet (white, pointing towards Earth). It was discovered on 28 March 2011 by NASA's Swift satellite. It has a diameter of between 4 and 9.3 million kilometres, and pulses every 3.5 minutes. Illustration published in 2011. | |
