Marine eutrophication, with filamentous green algae in the water highlighted with a bright light. This excess growth of algae (an algal bloom) is caused by an excess of dissolved nutrients, such as fertilisers washed into the sea from rivers. The growth of algae leads to the removal of oxygen which kills any animal life in the water, a condition called eutrophication. Photographed in the Mediterranean, off the coast of Spain. | |
