Ranavalona I (1778-1861), Queen of Madagasacar. Also known as Ranavalo-Manjaka I, she ruled as queen from 1828 to her death in 1861. Ranavalona initially relaxed controls on the spread of Christianity by missionaries, but in 1835 she banned her subjects from the religion. During her reign, she attempted to preserve Malagasy (Madagascan) culture. Her reforms were reversed after her death by her son who succeeded her to the throne. Artwork published in 1874. | |
