German printing pioneer Johannes Gutenberg (1400-1468) began preparing his printed edition of the bible in Mainz, Germany, in around 1450, with the first finished copies issued in 1454 or 1455. This illustration depicts the bible (centre) and various biblical scenes. The Gutenberg Bible is also known as the Mazarin Bible. It marked the start of the printing press revolution.
