Andrea Doria (1466-1560), Genoese admiral. Doria was a key statesman and naval commander for the Italian city state of Genoa (the Republic of Genoa). He served under the French and in the Spanish forces of the Holy Roman Empire, before helping to re-establish the independence of the Republic of Genoa in 1528 under imperial protection. His campaigns in the Mediterranean included wars with the Ottoman Turks and the Barbary pirates. As a leading official from a powerful family, he had great wealth, two palaces, and the title of 'Liberator and Father of His Country'. Artwork published in 1873. | |
