Yellow fever mosquito. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a female yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti. The head is at centre, with large compound eyes (mauve). The wings can be seen at centre left and right. There are two hairy antennae at upper frame and the long proboscis used for penetrating human skin and sucking blood is at lower centre. Only female mosquitoes suck blood and therefore carry disease. A. aegypti transmits filariasis, yellow fever and dengue fever to humans. Mosquito-borne diseases are a major problem throughout the tropics. Magnification: x100 at 6x6cm size. | |
