Atherosclerosis. Coloured Scanning Electron Micrograph of a plaque atheroma) which is partially blocking an artery to cause a condition called atherosclerosis. The plaque is attached to the wall of the blood vessel (green), and consists of a deposit of calcium (blue), and a mixture of fats (such as cholesterol) and proteins (such as fibrin) which appears yellow. An atheroma can greatly reduce the flow of blood in an artery. These blockages are a major cause of heart attacks and strokes. Atherosclerosis is principally caused by high fat diets, high blood pressure, cigarette smoking, obesity, and inactivity. Magnification: x125 at 6x6cm size. | |
