HIV viruses. Coloured Transmission Electron Micro- graph (TEM) of a section through Human Immuno- deficiency Viruses (HIV), cause of AIDS. The virus possesses different shapes. A spiked outer protein coat (yellow) surrounds a triangular core of RNA genetic material (red). The HIV virus is trans- mitted in body fluids, notably blood, semen and vaginal fluid. The virus attacks T-lymphocyte white blood cells of the immune system, weakening the body's ability to fight infection. A person who develops AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) may suffer weight loss and fever, before dying from normally non-life threatening diseases. Magnification: x40, 000 at 6x7cm size. | |
